Travel insurance for Europe

Get a quote

Whether you’re a history buff ticking off the incredible historic sights peppered across Europe, plan to island hop in Greece or take to the snow fields of the Swiss Alps, Europe is a region many Aussies are drawn to.

But if your bags never arrive, you’re in an accident, or are the victim of theft or mugging, suffice to say your trip may not go to plan. It helps to know that nib has travel insurance options for whatever you have planned on your trip.

What’s Covered?

Our travel insurance plans are designed to help take the hassle out of travel mishaps.

With a Comprehensive Plan and Essentials Plan, we offer varying levels of cover so you can compare the two and choose the coverage that’s right for you. Some of the key benefits include:

  • Cancellation costs
When you can’t travel because the unexpected has come up. Travel insurance may be able to help if you need to unexpectedly cancel your travel plans.

  • Medical expenses
Overseas medical expenses can quickly break the bank. If the worst happens, we may be able to help ease the cost of getting better.

  • Rental vehicle expenses
If you find yourself in an accident on your European road trip our cover can help cover the excess, and other rental vehicle expenses.

  • Luggage and personal effects
When you’re travelling, you’re often carrying some of your most valuable items with you. Whether your luggage goes missing or your electronics are swiped, our cover may be able to help recoup the costs.

  • Coronavirus-related events
Struck down with the ‘spicy cough’ while on your trip, or can’t even take off because you’ve been diagnosed before your trip? Our plans offer cover for a variety of coronavirus related events.

  • Medical evacuation and repatriation
Illness and injury can happen anywhere, even Europe’s most far-flung corners. If you find yourself needing emergency medical evacuation—or needing to return home for medical care—we’re here to help.

  • Natural disasters
Whether Iceland’s notorious volcanoes have haunted flights or wildfires are raging, nature has a knack for throwing a spanner in the works.

Why you should consider travel insurance when you travel to Europe

If you want to visit the lively locations in Europe (that are also hotspots for pickpockets and theft)
Although Europe is considered a safe to travel to, major cities like Rome, Paris, and Barcelona can be hotspots for pickpockets and petty theft. If you are planning on taking some valuable items in your luggage, you may want to consider taking out travel insurance for luggage and personal effects.

If you want to ski or snowboard (or enjoy any other snow sports) in Europe
The slopes in Europe are legendary but the pistes are no stranger to injury. We offer additional cover for snow sports so you can ride the run without the worry of what you’ll do if you’re injured.

If you want to participate in the outdoor adventures on offer
With world-class scuba diving, pristine mountain hikes, and destinations that lend themselves perfectly to cycling, the lure of the great outdoors is hard to resist in Europe. Whether you plan to surf, scuba dive, hike, or cycle, with nib, you have access to a range of benefits that can help if things go awry while you’re amongst nature.

Traveller tip: you should consider nib travel insurance cover if you plan to do different types of sports and activities. Our travel insurance may come in handy with baggage cover if you are taking expensive sports equipment such as your surfboard, kayak, or hiking gear.

If you want the ease of mind that comes with selecting travel insurance that offers International assistance 24/7 There's nothing more terrifying than being in an emergency somewhere you don’t speak the language. nib International assistance team are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to help.

What’s not covered

When you have a nib travel insurance plan we can help if the unexpected happens when you’re away from home. Because travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything, some things we don’t cover include:

  • Any medical, hospital, emergency services transport, dental expenses incurred while you’re in Australia
  • Changing your mind: If you decide not to travel because you’ve changed your mind
  • Unattended Luggage or personal belongings: If your luggage or belongings are stolen while left unattended, or where you’ve not taken reasonable care to look after it
  • Reckless behaviour: if you knowingly and intentionally participate in activities or place yourself in a situation which poses a risk to your personal safety
  • Coronavirus where you knowingly came into close contact with a case of coronavirus

We want you to travel confidently, knowing your travel insurance policy has you covered when you need it. It’s okay to go over your policy with a fine-toothed comb. In fact, we encourage it. Because it’s always a good idea to check and understand the terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions as outlined in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

FAQs

How do I make a claim?

Firstly, contact us as soon as you can. And in case of an emergency, our 24-hour International assistance team is here to help. Our Travel Claims article details what to do if you need to make a claim. Remember, you’ll need supporting documentation for your claim, such as a police report if there was a theft, or a property irregularity report if your airline lost your luggage, and any relevant receipts.

Is there a reciprocal health care agreement (RHCA) between Australia and Europe?

For some countries, yes. Smartraveller is a great resource for travellers to check if the country you’re travelling to has a RHCA with Australia. It’s important to remember a RHCA is not a replacement for travel insurance.
